John Lobb Captures Northern Tier 40 at The Hill
July 16, 2007
(Rew, PA) The Hill Raceway held its biggest night in track history Sunday night as the United Late Model Series made their first ever appearance to the Hill. This was the first time the super late models graced the famed ¼ mile oval in over ten years and the packed capacity crowd went home seeing some of the best racing of the year! John Lobb of Frewsburg, NY went home $2000 richer with his lap twenty-one pass of Ed Connor of Dubois.
A jammed packed grandstand saw seventeen ground pounding ULMS super late models roll onto the famed ¼ mile oval for the 40 lap Northern Tier 40. Ed Connor and Doug Ricotta paced the field due to their lucky JB Distributor / Coors Light Redraw and it was Connor jumping ahead of Ricotta as ULMS starter, Tony VanPelt threw the green and seventeen screaming devils flew down the front stretch into turn one. Connor quickly pulled away as Ricotta was fending off the challenges of David Scott. As the field completed lap five, Connor had a comfortable six car length over Ricotta and Scott as Chris Farrell and eighth place starting John Lobb was sitting fifth. As lap six was completed the cars of Ricotta and Scott made contact resulting in Ricotta spinning in turn one bringing out the first yellow of the event. Ricotta and Scott were both sent to the rear of the field. This put Farrell on the outside of Connor and Lobb found himself in third with Rick Isadore and Darrell Bossard now in fifth.
Connor again distanced himself from Lobb as Farrell kept close watch on the top two. As lap ten clicked off, Connor was still leading over a hounding Lobb, Farrell keeping within two car lengths of the top two, while crowd and local favorites, Rick Isadore and Jason Dupont rounded out the top five. Lobb consistently stayed glued to Farrell and then started to make his presence known on the outside as laps eleven thru twenty was clicking off. All the while David Scott was working his way back thru the field and at the halfway mark of the event, Connor held a half car length lead over Lobb at the line. Farrell, Isadore and Dupont still rounded out the top five as Scott was up to eighth. The very next lap, Lobb made the outside groove work for his liking and get around the #27c of Connor. The second and last yellow of the event was for Tom Shaffer in the SR1 who spun in turn 3.
Since the event was pass the halfway point, the field restarted single file Connor was now on the bumper of Lobb. The pair sprinted ahead of the field as Farrell still kept a close distance while Isadore and Dupont waged battle for fourth. As lap twenty-five clicked by Brent Rhebergan worked his way to sixth and Slowride was now seventh from his lap six incident with Ricotta. The next five laps saw Rhebergan and Dupont going at it for fifth with Scott trying inside and outside to get by both drivers. Rhebergan would come out on top with ten to go, but it would be Scott charging from seventh to fourth between laps thirty and thirty-three. While all that was going on, Lobb and Connor had the crowd on the feet, as Connor would slide under Lobb lap after lap only to see Lobb charge back by. With five to go Isadore would reclaim fifth from Rhebergan and Lobb would now pull away by a few car lengths over Connor and SlowRide was nipping at the back bumper of the Toyota #53 of Farrell. As Tony VanPelt thru the checkers, it was Lobb by four car lengths over Connor with Farrell edging Scott by a nosepiece for third and Rick Isadore coming home fifth. Rhebergan, Bossard, Dupont Mike Wonderling and Greg Oakes followed them.
Heat Winners were:
Scott, Connor and Isadore.
