UEMS ANNOUNCES TIRE RULE FOR 2009

February 28, 2009

ULMS Racing Series will open the tire rule for the upcoming 2009 season for the United Emod Series.

Beginning with the season opener at Mercer Raceway Park on Saturday, March 28, any 8 inch American Racer, Hoosier or Goodyear compound will be legal. Also any legal UMP or AMRA 8” tire will also be legal. No softening or conditioning of tires allowed. No re-caps are allowed and Grooving and siping of the tires will be allowed.

ULMS Racing Series director, Chris Zuver, stated, “I have been torn on this decision for the past two months. I have had countless talks with Hoosier, American Racer and Goodyear about the compounds on their tires and have even durometer tires from three different race teams to help come to my decision. We also are co-sanctioning at least two events with Tye Twarog of the new Tri State Modified Association as they have an open tire rule for their series and I did not want to force my racers to purchase certain tires for one or two shows.”

“Last year, I went into the Emod series completely blind and learned a lot throughout the season and done a lot of research about the division over the winter and have had numerous talks with race teams about the tires. AMRA has had one of the biggest point funds in the country and they have an open tire rule for their Hoosier contract. With our two big events at Tyler County Speedway in West Virginia on Memorial Day weekend and at Mercer Raceway Park (PA) in October, there is a possibility of cars from New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky for these events. This decision brings our series more in line with the southern series. Eriez Speedway and Raceway 7 have operated the past few seasons on an open tire rule for the Emods and their car counts have increased. Stateline Speedway’s annual Emod Invasion event is an open tire event. All of these variables have resulted in my decision in opening the tire rule up for 2009, commented Zuver.”

ULMS Racing Series also wants to caution the teams about their bodies on the Emods. ULMS Racing Series officials have seen several cars already this year and the nosepieces on some of these cars have a fin on each side of the front nose filler piece, which acts as a wing! This is illegal. You will be asked to cut off or flatten the lip on the filler piece. UEMS asks all teams please be “legal” at Mercer and all other UEMS events. Also, the rear window posts must be the same. If one rear window post is open the other window post must be open or they both must be closed.
