United Late Model Series joined forces last night at Pittsburgh Pa Motor Speedway for a pair of Twin 31 lap $2500 to win events. Latrobe, Pennsylvania’s Davey Johnson and South Park, Pennsylvania driver, Jared Miley won the two F2 Shockwave events.
PPMS regular, Kyle Lukon and ULMS star, Boom Briggs were the front row starters for the first edition of the F2 Shockwave. Briggs would charge out of turn two on the outside to sweep into the lead over Lukon and Mark Banal with lap one completed. The field would roar into turn one when Grafton, WV driver, Josh Coffman would loop it in turn two to bring out the first yellow. Briggs again would get the good jump on the start over Lukdon. Tony Musolino would come into second on lap three as Lukon fell to third. Briggs and Musolino would run door to door till lap four when Musolino would overtake Briggs on the backstretch and with five in the books it was Musolino, Briggs, Steve Baker, Lukon and Mike Johnson in fifth. Baker would pull a slide job on Briggs on lap seven to snag the second position away. With ten in the books it was Musolino checking out on the field with Baker in second and a furious battle for third between Boom Briggs, Lukon and thirteenth starting Tommy Beck as they raced three wide out of turn four. As the two leaders were all alone, the battle for third was hotter than the 90 degree temperatures the drivers were facing. Beck, Lukon, Briggs, Davey Johnson who was sixth after starting fifteenth, Mike Johnson, Alex Ferree and Keith Barbara were all there fighting for the third position. Disaster struck on lap fourteen for Musolino as he was in lap traffice made contact with the lap car of Leo Stadelman resultin in Musoloino to turn side ways into the front stretch wall ending his excellent run at the front. the running order now was the 2008 Pittsburgher 100 winner, Steve Baker on the point with, Beck in second from his thirteenth starting spot. Lukon was still in third, with fifteenth starter, Davey Johnson in fourth, followed by UFO point leader, Alex Ferree. Mike Johnson. Al Atallah, Boom Briggs, Keith Barbara, and Jim Stephens rounded out the top ten.
On the restart, Ferree would spin and bring out the yellow relinquishing the fourth spot as the cars of Dave Johnson (not Davey), Chuck Medved, Brandon Wearing, Leo Stadelman, Jim Lepro, Mel Minnick and Bobby Marietta were all involved. As the field restarted again, the cars of Barbara and Lukon got together resulting in a serious hard crash that would get 8 cars involved. Barbara and Lukon’s cars were destroyed with Lukon receiving a trip in the ambulance. The new running order was Baker, Beck, the Johnson brothers, of Davey and Mike with Al Atallah in fifth. Boom Briggs was leading the ULMS contingent in sixth followed by Jim Stephens, John Mollick, Jared Miley and Brent Rhebergen was now in the top ten.
Baker led the field to the restart and used the high groove to his liking with the halfway mark down in the books, the Johnson boys were now second and third with Davey making his presence known in second. The car on the move was Jared Miley with ten to go, Miley had charged to fifth and was still moving to the front as Davey was hunting down Baker for the lead. Lap 24 would see Baker get into the wall and this would allow Johnson to close right in on Baker. With six to go, Johnson was on the rear bumper of Baker and Miley had over taken Mike Johnson for third. Davey Johnson would make the pass on Baker in turn two to take the lead over and the #H1 of Jared Miley was still tracking down the top two cars. Miley would get around Baker with two to go but he would run out of laps to catch the #1J Rocket of Davey Johnson who started fifth. Miley would be second from his seventeenth starting spot. The second wave of the F2 Shockwave rolled onto the track with Minnick and ULMS point leader, Close on the front row leading the 25 remaining entries to Greg Wheeling’s green flag. Minnick got the jump on Close at the start and with the first lap in, it was Minnick, Close, Brent Rhebergen and Ben Miley your top four. Close would lose ground on lap two as Rhebergen would slide into second. Lap three would see the wiley veteran, Ben Miley charge into second ahead of Rhebergen and as the field took lap five, it was Minnick, Miley, Burgoon, and Rhebergen with the cars of Baker, Stephens, Beck Jared Miley and Mollick in tow. The cars of Beck, Miley and Mollic were three wide out of four bringing the fans to their feet until the yellow came ouf for Josh Coffman who spun in turn four. On the restart, Rhebergen got a great start and charged back to second but as the field rolled into turn three, the cars of Jared Miley, Rhebergen, Baker, and Ben Miley were four wide as they entered the homestretch. They all made it clear and into turn one as Brandon Burgoon overtook Minnick for the lead and the entire top five took a complete new look as Burgoon was your leader with Baker now second, followed by Beck, Minnick and hard chargin Jared Miley. With ten laps in, Burrgoon was rimriding his way around the Monster Half Mile. Making his steady move to the front was Jared Miley and race number one winner, Davey Johnson as Miley was now third on lap fifteen and the “Juice” was up to sixth.. The running order was, Burgoon, Baker, Jared Miley, Beck, Ben Miley, Davey Johnson, Minnick, Stephens, Rhebergen and Close.
Miley was on the bumper of Baker and on lap sixteen did a powerful slide job in turn four to grab the second spot from Baker and was rapidly closing in on PPMS point leader Burgoon. Lap 18 would see the yellow lights come on as the cars of Stephens and Minnick were found in turn two. The top ten looked like this, Burgoon leading over the very quick Jared Miley, baker, Beck, Ben Miley having a stellar run in fifth. Davey Johnson was still in sixth with Brent Rhebergen seventh, Mike Johnson, Bob Close and John Mollick in tenth. On the restart, Beck grabbed thrid from Baker. Davey Johnson would kick Baker back to fifth on the very next lap as Johnson was starting to make his late race run again as he did in the first event. Lap 20 would see Jared Miley slide job Burgoon for the lead and Johnson put Beck back as the #1J was still coming to the front. Ben Miley’s great run ended on lap 23 as he fell off the pace and went pit side. Jared Miley was checking out as Burgoon and Davey Johnson battled for second and Beck and Baker went at it for fourth. Johnson would clear Burgoon to clearly grab second on that lap. Miley had checked out and had a straightaway lead over Davey Johnson and would sail to his first ever ULMS win and join Davey Johnson as the two UFO/ULMS F2 Shockwave winners. Johnson would finish second after starting fourteenth. Miley started thirteenth in the field. Brandon Burgoon was third, Tommy Beck was fourth followed by Steve Baker. Mike Johnson, John Mollick, Brent Rhebergen, Alex Ferree and Boom Briggs rounded out the top ten. ULMS point leader, Close was eleventh.
