JOEL WATSON CHILLS THE UEMS FIELD AT MERCER’S “CHILLER THRILLER”

March 29, 2010

Joel Watson of Conneaut, Ohio loves Mercer Raceway Park. Watson won his one and only Kinzua Water Service United Emod Series in October of 2008 and started off the 2010 season back in victory lane at Mercer during the season opening “Chiller Thriller” and the $1000 prize. Twenty-five KWS UEMS Emods were on hand for the opening event of the 2010 season. This was the earliest opening date for both Mercer and the ULMS Racing Series ten years.

The Kinzua Water Service UEMS Heat #1 rolled onto the facility with a nine car field. 2009 Staeline Speedway champion, Justin Carlson and UEMS follower, Dave Atkinson were the front row starters. Carlson would lead the opening lap but 2007 Chiller Thriller winner, Rich Michael quickly flexed his muscles and would overtake Carlson as he would win the first event of the ULMS Racing Series 10th anniversary season. Vic Vena was second followed by Brent Rhebergen and Carlson. The race was marred by turn one incident that dropped ended the chances of Tim Engles, Kari Gasser and Dan Davies.

The Hoosier Tire-Mid Atlantic Heat #2 rolled onto the facility with seven cars as Darren Tarabori was a late scratch. UEMS regulars, Tim Peterson and Mike Eschrich paced the field to Todd Beemer’s green flag. Peterson quickly got to the point at the start as Carl McKinney moved into second. The car on the charge was the 2010 UMP Winter Nationals Champion, Dave Hess as he jumped from fifth to second by lap three and challenged Peterson the entire distance but Peterson would use the high groove momentum to hold off Hess for the win. Hess was second followed by UEMS regular, Greg Johnson, McKinney and Eschrich rounding out the top five.

UEMS TIRES

March 20, 2010

It was brought to my attention a week ago that Hoosier was coming out with TWO additonal Medium compounds for the Emods. I did some independent investigation of my own to find out what these tires durometer as and what compound they were. American Racer tire has informed me that if UEMS allowed the new Hoosier tires, THEY would make TWO additional compounds for their SOFTS, MEDIUM and HARD tires for the Emods. This would be NINE (9) compounds for American Racer and FIVE (5) compounds for Hoosier.

IN THE BEST INTEREST FOR THE RACER, IN COSTS, UEMS will not be allowing the Hoosier M100 or M200 AFTER the May 2nd Eriez UEMS event. This is only because I know there are racers that have already bought these tires for competition and this will allow them to use them up without having to spend X amount on additional tires for the upcoming early season events. ALL Tires must say after May 2nd (SOFT, MED or HARD) only.

The Kinzua Water Service United Emod Series kicks off their third season on March 27 at Mercer Raceway Park with the annual “Chiller Thriller” event. This will be the first of eighteen scheduled events on the KWS United Emod Series 2010 slate. The anticipation over the winter months for the Emod series has been tremendous and a good field of entries is expected for 2010s first event. Randy Hall is the defending two time UEMS “Chiller Thriller” winner along with the defending two time KWS UEMS Champion. Hall had a terrible outing in Florida with blowing a motor, but a new powerplant is expected to in the blue and yellow #10 BMS chassis for Mercer. Rich Michael of Ischua, NY won this event in 2007, when he had twenty-three feature win season and will be looking capture his first KWS UEMS win of his career. Dave Hess Jr. of Waterford, PA was third in the final UEMS points will no doubt be on hand as well as he is fresh off a very successful Florida SpeedWeeks program and being crowned the 2010 UMP Winter Nationals Champion at Volusia Speedway. He no doubt will be the favorite coming into Mercer with lots of confidence.
