CARL McKINNEY CAPTURES FIRST EVER UEMS WIN AT TRI CITY SPEEDWAY

May 31, 2010

By Brian Spaid

Carl McKinney of Mars, Pa., led every lap of the United E Mod Series (UEMS) race to capture his second win of the season and the 15th of his career at Tri-City. Driving Mike Hendrickson’s Whitehill’s Garage/Townsend Gas & Oil Pierce No. 6M, McKinney held off the hard charging Randy Hall to capture the final race of the a four-race weekend for the UEMS stars.

“I knew Randy was behind me on that final restart, and I was worried,” said McKinney. “I kept my line around the track and worked it off turn four. I saw Randy was outside of me a couple of times, but I wanted to focus on my line. I want to thank Mike for the car tonight. He and the crew did an awesome job. I also want to thank Chris Zuver and the UEMS folks. This four-race deal was really cool. Thanks also to all the fans that came out tonight.”

McKinney started on the pole position of the 25-lap affair and immediately took command of the race. He outdistanced the field leading by over five seconds at one point. Behind him, Evan Taylor held onto second over Jonathan Taylor, Mike Potosky, and Hall. Once the green flag dropped, Hall used his setup and expert driving ability to slowly work his way to the front. On the fifth lap, he passed Potosky for fourth. He passed Jonathan Taylor for third on the 10th circuit. He then used the outside cushion to pass Evan Taylor for second on the 18th circuit.

With the race non-stop up to this point, McKinney’s lead appeared insurmountable. Then, with two laps to go, Tim Engles spun in turn three while trying to take fourth from Jonathan Taylor. That closed the gap between McKinney and Hall, but two lapped cars gave McKinney a slight cushion. Hall passed both cars on the restart, then Engles spun again on the frontstretch. With one lap to go for the win, Hall was now on McKinney’s back bumper. On the final lap, McKinney held on as Hall tried to rocket off turns two and four passed the two-time track champion to no avail.

At the line, McKinney edged Hall by half a car length. Evan Taylor finished third. Bruce Powell, who crashed on the first lap of his heat race and made repairs to make the main event, started at the rear of the field and raced his way to fourth. Jonathan Taylor finished fifth. Evan Taylor and Hall won the E Mod heats.

HALL SLAYS THE MODISAURUS UEMS FIELD AT PPMS

May 30, 2010

Randy Hall of Olean, NY made the long trip to Pittsburgh PA Motor Speedway a very successful trip by capturing the Kinzua Water Service United Emod Series sanctioned event during the Modisaurus X.  Hall the defending two-time UEMS champion was making his first trip to PPMS since his UEMS win during last September’s Pittsburgher.

Twenty three of the twenty-four UEMS Emods entered the big Monster Half Mile oval for the 25 lap Modisaurus event.  PPMS point leader and defending champion, Daryl Charlier sat on the pole position with young Evan Taylor flanking the Midway Missle.  As the two front row starters raced into turn one, the top two swapped lanes as Charlier went to the top of the track and Taylor went to the bottom, with Charlier shooting into the lead out of turn two.  As Charlier tripped the flag stand to complete lap one the yellow lights came on for Brad Westover and Brock Moskey in turn three.  Charlier again got a good start on Taylor as Carl McKinney slipped into second and Randy Hall battled Taylor for third and would take third over on lap three till lap five when the yellow lights flashed again for Joe Beiz, who stopped at the back stretch pit entrance.

Charlier again took the outside row starting position for the restart and the race was on for second behind Charlier as Hall would get around McKinney for second and take chase after Charlier.  Lap seven would see Hall get into the turn two wall and ripping part of the right side spoiler away from the car and Charlier pulled away a few more car lengths.  With ten laps down, Charlier was up by a dozen car lengths over Hall followed by McKinney, Chuck Kennedy, Evan Taylor and Vince Laboon in fifth.  Hall would close in on Charlier as he hit the turn two wall like Hall did few laps earlier as the Midway Missle was racing in lap traffic.  With the race hitting the halfway point of the event, Charlier and Hall were rim riding there cars around the big half mile with McKinney, Kennedy and Evan Taylor sitting in fifth.  With ten laps remaining, “Ms. UEMS” Kari Gasser was now in fifth and was on the prowl to get Kennedy for fourth.  Lap seventeen would see the “big one” happen on the back stretch that involved the Taylor brothers, Vince Laboon, JJ Bametzrieder and the “Martin Ferry Madman”, JE Stalder.

With a single file restart, Charlier led Hall, McKinney and rest of the field into turn one.   Hall kept his Follman Rental Properties BMS Emod right on Charlier’s bumper.  On lap twenty Hall dove under Charlier and pulled a perfect slide job and the Midway Missle.  Charlier would pitch his machine left to cut back under Hall but the blue and yellow #10 AFCO Racing Products machine.  With two laps remaining fourth place running Chuck Kennedy came to a stop in turn four two set up a two lap shootout.

Hall restarted the field and would go the final two laps in winning the $800 to win Modisaurus X over Daryl Charlier, McKinney, Kari Gasser was fourth followed by Kevin Miller.  Tom Martineck came home sixth with Kyle Bedell making his first ever start at PPMS coming home in seventh.  Vince Laboon was eighth followed by Evan Taylor and Jim Turley.

Rich Michael Jr Wins UEMS special at Raceway 7!

May 30, 2010

by Jay Pees

Conneaut, OH (May 28, 2010): Finally nature graced Raceway 7 with a beautiful evening for racing and the racing was as hot as the daytime temperature with the Kinzua Water Service United E-Mod Series making a visit to the raceway.

Twenty-four Zimmer Service Center E-Mods took the green for the visiting Kinzua Water Service UEMS E-Mods after qualifying through four heats and a B-Main to trim the field from the 29 cars signed into the pits. Busti, NY’s Greg Johnson led the first two laps until caution was shown for an incident in turn four involving Brian Douglas. After the restart, Randy Hall and Rich Michael Jr came through to run second and third until Mercer winner Joel Watson got by Hall for third at lap four. Michael got by for the lead on a restart at lap four with Joel Watson coming to second at lap six. At lap ten the running order was Michael, Watson, Johnson, Russ Dunn, all the way from 15th at the start, and Hall running fifth. By lap fourteen Michael had a several car-length lead but had it evaporate when former champion Jack Young spun in lap two. Under the caution Watson retired to the pits putting Johnson right on the leader’s tail for the restart. At fifteen Dunn got by Johnson for second and started to reel in Michael. Michael was up to the task and handily lead the remainder of the event to record his second consecutive win at Raceway 7 in 2010. Dunn wound up second with Johnson third, Hall fourth, and Brent Rhebergen fifth.
