Dave Hess Collects UEMS Tri State Challenge Win at Eriez

May 23, 2011

Hammet, PA (May 22, 2011): Coors sponsored Eriez Speedway’s opening night with the United E-Mod Series sanctioning the final leg of the 2011 Tri-State Challenge. Randy Hall, winner at Raceway 7, and Joel Watson, winner at Stateline were in line for extra cash should they win the final night. With the challenge being a $200 bonus to win more than one of the weekend’s events at Raceway 7, Stateline, and Eriez.

The main event for the evening was the 25-lap United E-Mod Series Tri-State Challenge for the Plyler Overhead Door E-Mods. Russ Dunn led from the pole position with Dan Davies on the chase. The car on the move in the early going was seventh starting Dave Hess Jr, advancing to fourth by the time of the first yellow flag, for a spin in turn two by Ben Burgess Jr with nine laps complete. Burgess’ incident appeared to have been mechanically caused as the car had to be towed off the speedway. Using the double-file restart, Dan Davies nearly appropriated the lead but Dunn was able to re-assume the point just as caution again was displayed, for a three car tangle in turn four. From the restart again the two leaders were side by side until turn four when Davies slipped wide, allowing seventh starting Hess Jr to get by for second. Dunn, the 2010 Raceway 7 Champion, was running well but Hess was closing the gap with five laps to go. With four to go Hess dove to the inside and got by for the lead on the front straight. With two to go, Kyle Bedell spun in turn four, setting up a dash to the checkers with Hess leading, Dunn second, and Stateline winner Joel Watson third. Randy Hall, winner at Raceway 7, had been fourth but retired to the pit with a hole in his radiator. Hess handily went on to the win with Dunn holding on for second, Watson third, Dave Lyon fourth and Davies falling to fifth at the end.

Conneaut, OH (May 20, 2011): The weather forecast was not the best for afternoon and early evening but when fans arrived at the Raceway 7 for the first segment of the Tri-State Challenge for the Zimmer Service Center UEMS E-Mods the sky was clear with warm air bathing the grounds. By the end of the night rain was threatening but all racing was completed with Olean, NY’s Randy Hall, a past Zimmer Service Center E-Mod Champion taking home the win in the first leg of the Tri-State Challenge, a special with the sanction of Chris Zuver’s popular United E-Mod Series. 2010 Champions Max Blair (Evergreen Lake Park Campgrounds FASTRAK Late Models) and Jonny Boyd (Son Construction Mini Stocks continued their winning ways into the new season and Rush Firestone (Campbell’s Mini Storage Street Stocks) broke into the winner’s column for the first time in his career at Raceway 7.

2009 track champion Percy McDonald jumped into the immediate lead of the UEMS 25-lapper for the Zimmer Service Center E-Mods with Randy Hall second at the end of lap one just as yellow flew for a spin in turn four by Chuck Steinle Jr. At the restart Hall charged by McDonald with McDonald spinning in turn two for the second caution of the event. At the restart it was again Hall with Rich Michael coming to second and Kari Gasser third. On lap three Michael scraped the wall on the back straight, then slowed and was collected by Al Brewer in turn three. At lap five Bud Watson dispatched Gasser back to third and then Joel Watson also got by for third. At halfway Hall had a half straight lead over Bud Watson with Joel Watson another three lengths back. Running fourth was Justin Carlson with Gasser back to fifth. Hall went on to the win in the brand new car, just finished Friday morning. Cousins Bud and Joel Watson battled to the end with Bud getting the runner-up honors, and Joel third. Carlson wound up fourth with Jack Young fifth. Hall, a former class champion, said in the winner’s circle that this is his first win this season, getting a late start and completing the car just today. Hall noted this is a team sport and he certainly could not run this well all by himself.

UEMS RULE MODIFICATIONS

April 1, 2011

April 1, 2011

All winter long, UEMS took the approach of going with a 45 durometer number or harder tire rule.  Our goal was to bring the amount of tires that teams were carrying in the hauler down in half as the tire manufacturers have a minimum of five tire compounds out for the general public for use.  UEMS sees this as a major cost factor in the Emod division when there are a minimum two sets of softs, mediums and hard tire compounds per manufacturer.  UEMS hoped that regional tracks would come on board and join our series in hopes to help the racer save some money in their tire bill.

Obviously, since no track has changed their “open” tire rule policy, the United Emod Series will be re-opening the 2011 tire rule to ANY 8” Hoosier, American Racer or Goodyear tire.  This means the American Racer soft (38), American Racer TSMA soft (44), American Racer medium (48), American Racer TSMA hard (53) and American Racer hard (56) compounds will be allowed.  The Hoosier soft, medium 100, 200, medium and hard compounds will be allowed.  Goodyear soft, medium and hard will be allowed.

ULMS Racing Series Director, Chris Zuver stated, “drivers, I want to state, that I am not happy doing this, but with every weekly track allowing soft compounds, I am not saving you the racer a dime as you all will have softs on your cars at your weekly events if you want to be competitive with your competition.”    “Without the support of the weekly tracks and other regional series, I do not foresee a change in this tire battle.”

UEMS also would like to remind the race teams that the UEMS roof and sail panel body rule is the same as the Tri State Modified Association (TSMA) body rule (http://www.tri-statema.com/downloads/2011-rules/ModifiedBody.pdf).  Our region is lucky, that Emods from southern Ohio, West Virginia along with all of western New York, Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio are all similar in this body rule. Let’s keep our Emods as Emods and not looking like the full-size DIRT modified.   This rule and all body rules will be enforced by UEMS, failure to comply will result in a 200# weight penalty (2600#).   For events that do not have scales on hand, be prepared to have your car within the rules or have the tin shears ready.  The body rule DID NOT CHANGE over the winter!
