JOEL WATSON CAPTURES UEMS “Night with the Outlaws” at MCR IN FRONT OF BIGGEST CROWD IN TRACK HISTORY

EAST SMETHPORT, PA – July 27, 2011 Racing in front of a standing-room-only crowd that ranked as the biggest in the history of the one-third-mile oval, Conneaut, OH driver, Joel Watson captured his second UEMS win of the year by winning the United Emod Series “Night with the Outlaws” portion at McKean County Raceway.

United Emod Series point leader, Joel Watson of Conneaut, Ohio captured his second win of the series also on Wednesday night after out dragging three time defending series champion, Randy Hall on a lap sixteen restart.

Hall started the event from the second position beside, Rich Michael Jr. and Hall would immediately rocket to the front to lead the opening lap. Michael would slide back to fifth by lap two as Watson settled in second behind Hall with Greg Johnson and Bob Close ahead of Michael. Michael would lose fifth on lap seven to Travis Asel but would fight the next lap to retain fifth as the #10 of Hall would extend his lead over Watson. Close would move into third on lap nine and as lap thirteen clicked off the board, the 17x of Michael would come to a stop on the backstretch ending his evening and handing the fifth place position over to Asel.

Johnson would get back by Close on the restart but the last yellow would come out on lap 15. With the double file restart, Watson got a excellent start and would take the lead over from Hall who led the first 15 laps and Close would take back third from Johnson. Just sitting outside the top five was Kyle Bedell and thirteenth starting Chad Ruhlman filling in for Brent Rhebergen was seventh. Hall closed in on Watson in the final laps and seemed to have a shot at Watson as on the final lap was being completed Ruhlman spun in turn 1 as the leaders raced in turn three and four with the checkers flying Watson would cross the victory stripe over Hall over Close, Johnson and Asel rounding out the top five.

Burgoon & Johnson Win UFo/ULMS F-2 Shockwave at PPMS with 6 Lead Changes!

Imperial, PA (July 23, 2011) Davey Johnson of Imperial, PA became the all-time UFo Race Championship feature winner and Brandon Burgoon of McDonald, PA captured his first UFo and ULMS win at the F-2 Shockwave at Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway Saturday night. Both drivers earned $2,000 for their victories in an event that featured 6 lead changes.

Jared Miley and Brandon Burgoon led the field at the start of the 1st 28 lap feature race. After the initial start was fouled by a 5-car incident, Miley jumped out to the lead on the fast track when the race was restarted with Burgoon in hot pursuit. The 2nd caution of the night appeared for ULMS point leader Mike Knight, as his car stopped with a flat tire.

On the restart Burgoon powered into the lead from the bottom and jumped up to the cushion with Miley and Keith Barbara now chasing him. 2 additional cautions appeared for flat tires on lap 10 for Michael Norris and lap 15 for UFo point leader Devin Frise.. Burgoon continued to lead at each restart. 5th starting Dave Hess Jr found the bottom to his liking on the restarts and started to challenge Miley and Barbara each time the race returned to green.

Burgoon fought off the challenges and lead the remaining laps with Miley coming home in 2nd. Hess crossed the line in 3rd. Friese charged back from the tail to finish 4th with Davey Johnson finishing 5th. Mike Johnson and Boom Briggs finished 6th and 7th. Barbara experienced motor problems in turn 4 of the final lap and coasted across the line in 8th. Michael Davis and Chad McClellan rounded out the top 10.

An inversion of 10 was drawn for the 2nd feature. Miley opted to use his uncle’s 99 as a backup car, relegating him to the rear ahead of alternate drivers. With Barbara scratching from the race, the actual inversion was 8 cars. This put McCellan and UFo PENNational winner Davis on the front row. Like déjà vu of the “PENNational,” Davis motored into the lead after racing 3 wide down the backstraight on the 1st lap with McClellan and Briggs. Mike Johnson and Davey Johnson quickly moved up to 1st and 2nd and were in pursuit. The 1st caution of the event appeared for Burgoon on lap 5 with another caution for a multi-car incident on lap 6.

The remainder of the race would run under the green flag and would be an all-out war for the win. On the restart, Hess once again found magic on the bottom of the track and began to challenge Davis for the lead. Hess powered into the lead on lap 7, but Davis returned the favor and returned to the point on lap 8. Meanwhile, Davey Johnson was also working the bottom of the track and moved into 3rd.

As the race continued, the top 3 started to wage battle for the win. Hess moved up to the cushion to stay within striking distance of Davis, with Johnson finding the right groove on the bottom of the track. Johnson took over 2nd and then set his sights on Davis. As the two raced through lap traffic, they exchanged the lead 3 times in the final 5 laps with Johnson leading lap 24, Davis laps 25 and 26, and Johnson finally taking control with only 2 to go.

Johnson became the all-time UFo win leader with the victory with Davis following in 2nd. Friese became faster in the late stages of the race and grabbed 3rd with Hess in 4th. Mike Johnson crossed the line in 5th, with Jared Miley bringing the pink spec-motor 99 to a 6th place finish after starting 17th. Briggs, John Garvin Jr, Daryl Charlier, and Steve Baker rounded out the top 10.

The next ULMS event will be Thursday August 4 at McKean Co Raceway with the 7th annual Stephanie Eckl Memorial paying a minimum $3500 to win. August 13 will see ULMS head to the high banks of Woodhull Raceway in Woodhull, NY for the 20th annual Late Model Reunion. The UFo and ULMS Super Late Models will clash once again at Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway on Saturday, August 20 for the “Red Miley Rumble.” This race will pay $4,000 to win, but bonus money is being collected through position sponsors which will boost the payoff throughout the field. The Outlaw 410 Sprints will also be racing for $2,100 to win as part of the UFo vs. ULMS “Red Miley Rumble.”

Dave Hess Jr. Wins Jay’s Auto Wrecking ULMS Super Late Feature at Stateline Speedway

By Glenn Slocum

Saturday July 16th, 2011 Busti, NY: Hot racing and hot weather for the Jays Auto Wrecking ULMS $4,000 to win Super Late Model event at Stateline Speedway.
Dave Hess Jr. never relinquished the lead in the Jay’s Auto Wrecking ULMS Super Late Model event surviving several cautions but was never really challenged for the win. It was his second ULMS win at Stateline for the season and his third in four attempts.

John Haggerty and Kyle Scott were on the front row for the Crate Late Model feature and Haggerty became the early leader. A three car tangle collected Ed Carley, Scott, and T.J. Downs for the first caution. Justin Kreider and Adam Hilyer did a tandem spin for caution two. Three laps were complete with Haggerty, Newt Tackett and Steve Dixon were the restart leaders. Haggerty was able to extend his lead over the next green flag run as Dixon was trying to hold off Bob Dorman for second. Tackett had slipped to fourth and had Ed Carley on his bumper challenging for the spot. With 10 laps complete Haggerty led by half a straight with Dorman and Dixon side by side for second. Kreider spun with 12 laps complete for caution three. One more lap was completed before the next caution with four cars involved. They were four wide on the restart for second place. Dixon held onto the spot as Haggerty moved away from the filed. Harvey tested the turn two concrete with sixteen laps complete for caution four. Dixon lost second to Dorman on the restart with Haggerty once more moving away. Justin Tatlow and John Lacki brought out caution five. The just two laps remained in the event. Haggerty held on for the win his first Crate Late win at Stateline.

BOB CLOSE AND Lil “Rimrider” DAN DAVIES WIN UEMS FEATURES AT LITTLE VALLEY

By Dave Sully and Chris Zuver

(Little Valley, NY)There were twin E-Mod Features this night, one the regular UEMS Series race and the other an UEMS make-up event, which was stopped after eight laps by a power outage and thunder storm on May 29th. That race was restarted with a complete restart.

The makeup event went to former Super Late Model standout, Bob Close, from Eldred, PA. Close went off 11th, but was on a tear early, claiming third by lap four and then stalking leader Rich Michael for several laps before taking the point on lap 13 of the 20 lapper with a turn two pass. Michael would slide high in turn one the next lap allowing UEMS point leader Joel Watson to get by Watson was all over Close in the final laps, with help from a late caution, but couldn’t get a run for the lead as Close would pick up his second ever UEMS win and his first of the 2011 season. Close commented, “Michael’s fun to race with. He’ll drive it in as hard as he can. I knew Watson was there at the end. I didn’t need that caution.”
